Preterm Infant Trial Finds Similar Choline Exposure Across Four Forms

Study Design

Researchers enrolled 32 enterally fed preterm infants born at 28.0 to 32.0 weeks gestation and randomized them to receive an extra 30 mg/kg/day choline-equivalent for 48 hours.

The four tested forms were choline chloride, choline bitartrate, alpha-glycerophosphorylcholine, and egg phosphatidylcholine, with plasma choline, betaine, and phosphatidylcholine measured by tandem mass spectrometry.

Main Findings

According to the paper, all four supplements increased plasma choline by 51 to 54 hours after supplementation began, and overall choline exposure over 54 hours was similar across the groups.

GPC increased choline most rapidly at the 6-hour measurement point, while the study did not find differential effects on plasma betaine or phosphatidylcholine.

For choline ingredient buyers in early-life nutrition, the result suggests that short-term plasma exposure may not be the main differentiator between common choline forms at comparable choline-equivalent dosing.
