MFGM Spread Trial Finds No Acute Post-Meal Lipid Effect

Trial Design

The randomized, double-blind crossover study enrolled 12 healthy adults and tested three high-fat dairy spreads that differed only in milk fat globule membrane characteristics: intact, disrupted, or absent.

At each visit, participants consumed two sandwich meals delivering 40 g of milk fat per meal, and the MFGM-containing conditions provided about 120 mg of phospholipids per meal.

Results

The primary endpoint was postprandial plasma triglyceride incremental area under the curve, and the abstract reported no acute effect of MFGM content or structure on postprandial lipidemia.

Secondary measures also covered gastric emptying, energy expenditure, respiratory exchange ratio, appetite ratings, and ad libitum intake.

Buyer Takeaway

For MFGM and dairy phospholipid suppliers, the study shows that matrix engineering does not automatically translate into short-window lipid changes in healthy adults.

That matters when separating longer-term ingredient-evidence discussions from claims based on a single acute-meal test design.
