Egg-Derived Phosphatidylcholine Trial Finds Modest TMAO Response

What the Trial Tested

Researchers assessed, for the first time, the effect of long-term egg-derived phosphatidylcholine intake on serum trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) concentrations in healthy Japanese middle-aged and older adults. The 32 participants were divided into four groups by daily phosphatidylcholine intake: placebo (0 g), low-dose (0.3 g), medium-dose (1.0 g), and a high-dose group, over 12 weeks.

Twelve weeks of egg-derived phosphatidylcholine supplementation did not produce serum TMAO concentrations approaching clinically concerning levels under the tested conditions. The authors suggest egg-derived phosphatidylcholine may serve as a dietary choline source without inducing a substantial elevation in TMAO in this population.

The results are specific to the studied dose range and population and should not be generalized to other choline or lecithin forms.
